Relations between Netanya and Chernivtsi have grown stronger in recent years. On 27 April 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding on Friendly Relations and Cooperation was signed in Netanya by Roman Klichuk, Mayor of Chernivtsi, and Shiri Haguel-Saidon, Deputy Mayor of Netanya, who signed on behalf of the Municipality of Netanya.
Chernivtsi is the capital of Chernivtsi Oblast in western Ukraine and one of the country’s most important historical, cultural, and academic centers. The city has a population of approximately 260,000.
Located on the banks of the Prut River, Chernivtsi was founded in 1408. Throughout its history, the city was part of the Principality of Moldavia, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Romania, and the architectural and cultural influences of these periods remain visible today.
Chernivtsi is renowned for its historic city center and for the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, whose historic complex has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding architectural value. The city is an important center of higher education, culture, the arts, and Ukraine’s multicultural heritage.
The Memorandum of Understanding between Netanya and Chernivtsi is intended to promote cooperation in the fields of tourism, economy, culture, science, technology, sport, transportation, environmental protection, trade, and industry, as well as local governance, education, urban development, sustainability, safety, and emergency preparedness.
The cooperation between the two cities is based on the principles of friendship, equality, and mutual benefit, with the aim of promoting the exchange of knowledge, professional experience, and joint initiatives for the benefit of the residents of both cities.
