In Mea Shearim, a group of women decides to rebel against the community’s leadership to save one of them from an unhappy, violent marriage. They use the only ancient and effective weapon they have: they withhold themselves from their husbands. They refuse to go to the mikveh and stop all marital relations until their friend is freed from her marriage.
“The Rebels” is a moving and funny drama by Amnon Levy, who brings a women’s struggle for equality to the most unexpected place. Levy, the author of “Shayndele”, returns to the ultra-Orthodox woman of Mea Shearim, inspired by a similar move that recently took place in the Satmar community in New York.
