Dortmund – Germany
A Twin City agreement was signed on 16/11/81 with Mayor Reuben Kliegler
The city of Dortmund was established around 880 AD and it was called Dortfund. It gradually developed into one of the most important and most affluent cities during the Hanseatic period as it shipped wool ,cloth ,wine as well as iron and steel products all over Europe. Cultural and educational institutes are dotting the city. Today Dortmund has a population of 586,000 people.
In the recent past Dortmund has emerged as an international center for sports especially because of the local football team, which has had great achievements along the years both in the German League and in All-European games.
The Borussia Dortmund team dates back to 1909, and got its name from Prussia’s name in the Latin Language. The team’s uniform was designed with blue and white stripes, a red sash and black pants, but it was replace in 1913 for the well known yellow and black striped uniform of today.
Borussia Dortmund climbed up to the 6th place in the German Bundes Liga, which is similar to the German Premier League, having won many awards. Among them:
1966 – The first German team to win the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup
1997 – Became the first German team to win the UEFA Champions League Championship at the Intercontinental Cup 1997
Interestingly, the Dortmund team uniform is very similar to the uniforms of its Twin City’s football team, Maccabi Netanya.
